To Vote, Or Not To Vote

It has been not quite a week since our Primary here in Florida and this morning, as I was going through the weeks papers to put them out for recycling, I saw this story in our local paper, the Daily Commercial:
Worst Florida Primary turnout in 16 years.

As the story says, only roughly 17% of the nearly 12 million Florida voters, actually voted.

That is so depressing.

No, it was not a BIG or lengthy Ballot, no Presidential or Senatorial Candidates, no major crisis in the state looming, to draw the huge crowds, but it was a Primary Election and if you did not vote in it, you cannot vote in the Fall.

At least that’s the way it is in California, who knows how it works here.

Since moving here 10 years ago, I have come to see Florida as the wild, wild west of the South.

I have worked for several newspapers,  big and small and consider this to be an excellent one for a non major market area, like for example, Orlando.

They always get right to the point, do their job well and never hold back.

So seeing this today really hit home and it hurt.

For those of you not familiar with the current Florida political scene, the state is pretty much controlled by mostly Ultra Conservative Republicans, starting at the top with our Governor, who have a strangle hold on many Issues that are critical to people like me, or common people!

Seeing this caption made me wonder, have the rest of the Voters in Florida just given up, thinking that it is of no use to get involved,  or care, or lastly to Vote because the Republicans control everything anyway?

God I sincerely hope not.

You see, not everyone who lives here, is from here.

Many like me, came here from other states where the balance of politics is, well, more balanced.

So, seeing this in print today worries me, a lot.

To call this Voter Apathy is an understatement!

In November, will these same turned off, tuned out, complacent, and mostly just fed up, voters even bother to vote?

If they don’t, then like the old saying goes:  ” If you don’t vote, you have no right to complain about the way things are.”

Dear Readers, I hate to keep harping on this point, but feel compelled to do so once again.

Voting, is a privilege, not a right.

And if you refuse to be involved in the way that your country is being run and by who, you just may lose that privilege.

Think it can’t happen?

Take a look around the Planet.

Millions of other commoners, just like you and me, no longer have this privilege people, wake up and VOTE!
